Evaluation of cryogenics-based energy storage concepts

The goal of this paper is to evaluate cryogenics-based energy storage concepts: A thermo-electric energy storage unit, which uses surplus electricity while liquefying a gas, subsequently stored at cryogenic temperature. Here we review and evaluate concepts for power generation while regasifying the liquefied gas (cryogen) using an exergetic analysis. Two cold exergy recovery cycle configurations are considered: (a) direct expansion of liquid air, and (b) expansion of liquid air in combination with a CH4 Rankine cycle. Combining direct expansion of a constant liquid air stream with an indirect Rankine cycle recovering the cold enables to increase the power output by 15%. Colocation to a waste heat source is beneficial, as waste heat recovery allows exergy efficiencies above 50%.
